Oh Doh

by admin on July 2, 2009

This being Mpact slack off week, I’ve experimented with going out and going home. Also got spiffy ride fixed as his water pump was broke.. Tried Doh sushi in cooper young with a russian princess (RP). I was most impressed with the boutique atmosphere of the place. The sushi had a great deal of variety, we tried some soft shell crab sushi with a corn pudding sauce. The tuna was dark and fatty. The strawberry infused sushi roll was also interesting. I found the rice a bit tightly backed. Overall, a cool place and the attempted variety is unusual for memphis sushi. sushi 001

RP was not overly impressed but thought it was okay. Given what I’ve seen of her so far I’m not sure RP is impressed with anything though, I’m not sure the hot summer has started to thaw her out. Her unimpressiveness  tends more toward the blase and unimprssed though and lacks the panache and personality of the ice queen’s ice stare. Maybe the ice queen can give her lessons so RP can be an ice queen someday herself.

Toasted

by admin on June 27, 2009

frenchtoastWent to trolley tour. Interesting premier of a preview of Daylightfades www.daylightfades.com , a locally produced either horror or macabre drama wasn’t sure, a memphis music foundation party where even on of the notoriously reclusive local circuit judges made an appearance, and the improving firedancer were all overshadowed by what everyone agreed was the key feature of this trolley tour it was really really hot.

Recovered later briefly at the Rumba Room.

Went to the young lawyer happy hour at encore. Encore has a line of spiffy non-alcoholic drinks such as fresh squeezed lemonaide and a really snappy peach soda.

At Republic tried a sample of a pecan walnut french toast. Said was really good, and was told not available for purchase yet. Without promising a review, I was spontaneously offered a free one provided I gave a detailed description which follows. It is a rich french toast, made with a flavorful homemade bread well infused but not overwhelmed with a cinnamon and covered with a caramelized nutty pecan raisin topping that was neither skimpy nor overwhelming. The only downside to potential mission accomplishment might be an excessively dry exterior, but it wasn’t a major detriment.

Look for it soon at Republic on the weekend brunch menu, in the future looked for stuffed pear and strawberry.

Beignet Cafe

Recently, the Beignet Cafe opened up near where I lived. Excited at the prospect of not having to travel to new orleans for the yummy french doughnut I was excited by the prospect.
Its a great place. The beignets at their best rival New Orleans. Unfortunately I’ve found them quite erratic. Never inedible though. I’ve heard [...]

Cooking with David- How I cook a steak. with a Balsamic Vinegar Reduction

June 10, 2009

First Get a flat steak of up to about two inches thick. Ribeye is best though this is also really good with filet.
Season both sides with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. A good variation with a southwestern theme is ground chili powder and paprika.
Heat a cast iron skillet (preferably as small as possible and still [...]

Weekend

June 8, 2009

Made a brief appearance at Ptolemy’s luau party, which was quite interesting. The food was the same as the coronation party, which I found odd. I thought some chicken skewers and other luauish food would’ve livened it up. maybe some poi patties.
Went to Celtic’s Oyster Festival Saturday. Tried the expensive Irish oysters. Was not overly [...]
